Our eco-responsible and farming commitments

In keeping with the layout, we felt it was important to develop sustainable tourism by applying the following eco-responsible criteria:

  • ENERGY: focus on moderating energy needs through quality insulation, low-energy lighting and appliances, installation of thermal solar panels covering most of the hot water and heating needs, complemented by an automated pellet-burning insert. Summer air conditioning is provided by natural ventilation protected by mosquito nets and blackout windows. We also have photovoltaic panels on site.
  • WATER ECONOMY: a 5,000l tank of rainwater is used to water the vegetable garden, a double water circuit has been installed in the gîte, one for the drinking water network and the other for the well water for the washing machine and WC (double set point), taps and showers are equipped with flow limiters.
  • RE-EMPLOYMENT: some of the furniture from the family home has been re-used, and the terrace is made from oak grown in our hedgerows.
  • WASTEWATER TREATMENT: wastewater from the entire village (3 houses: the gîte, ours and our neighbors') is discharged through a phyto-purification system (filter planted with reeds), which we maintain.
  • SELECTIVE SELECTION: We are very committed to sorting, reducing and recycling our waste. We inform our guests of the instructions to be followed. They have 5 garbage cans, each with its own explanatory sheet:
  • 1 Recyclables
  • 2 Glass
  • 3 Compost
  • 4 Food scraps for the chickens
  • 5 General waste

For all these points, we make our guests aware of environmental issues.

GITE DE GRAND LIEU

The gîte was built in Gérard's family home. His family arrived in Bas Fief in 1875, and since then the story of a long line of farmers has continued to this day. We completely renovated the house to make it a welcoming place. Our aim was to make it peaceful. It was an obvious decision to use natural materials: lime facade, lime/hemp interior walls, wood wool insulation... We also wanted it to be accessible to all.

The 175 m2 gîte, which can accommodate up to 15 people, includes a living room with fully-equipped open kitchen, 2 bedrooms and a shower room on the ground floor accessible to people with reduced mobility, 4 bedrooms and 3 shower rooms, 2 of which are private, and a relaxation area upstairs. Enjoy the private enclosed garden with its large south-facing covered terrace. Tourism and Handicap label.

Territory description

The Gîte de Grand Lieu is located in the heart of nature, on the shores of the "près-marais" (marshlands) in summer, where extensive cattle farming takes place, and of Lac de Grand Lieu in winter, on the GRP circuit around Lac de Grand Lieu.

In winter, the lake's overflows approach the gîte without threatening it. It's France's largest lowland lake, covering some 7,000 ha. This freshwater lake boasts 2 National Nature Reserves, 7 professional fishermen and a wealth of flora and fauna recognized worldwide (RAMSAR site). It's also a rich migratory crossroads, so come and watch the birds up close at the Passay ornithological observatory in La Chevrolière.

Numerous hiking, mountain biking and mountain bike trails in the marshes are accessible from the gîte, with various variations depending on the season and lake level. 24 other hiking trails are available in the ComCom region, as well as 6 bike trails with junctions between them.

If the sun is shining, we recommend climbing the 158 steps, over 43m high, to the bell tower of the St Lumine de Coutais church, for a 360° view of Lac de Grand Lieu, Nantes and all adjacent towns. People with reduced mobility will be able to watch these magnificent landscapes live, at the entrance, via cameras installed at the top of the belvedere. You can also take a dip in the La Boulogne lake in St Philbert de Grand Lieu, 10 minutes away. It's supervised and a water shooting range is available in summer.

On rainy days, you can visit the 11th-century abbey church in St Philbert de Grand Lieu, the Maison des Pêcheurs museum in Passay or the recently renovated Château de la Touche in La Limouzinière. If you like games, you can also visit the toy library in St Lumine de Coutais.
